Album – Surfer Blood : Astro Coast

Florida’s Surfer Blood are disgustingly young. The sun-soaked alt.rock with a distinctly 90s bent (in a good way, a very good way) that they pedal is so good you think it must be a fluke, and Astro Coast’s opener, ‘Floating Vibes’, sounds almost too good to be true. A sublime fuzzed up riff is backed up by audio sunshine that sounds like Pavement covering Weezer and before you know it the relentless second track ‘Swim’ floods out the speakers. Awash with harmonies, reverb and self-assured crunch guitars, it’s another near instant classic. From then on the fluke theory is a little closer to the truth but that opening knockout onetwo is a tough act to follow. Astro Coast is a very good album punctuated by moments of greatness. The kids are alright.
