Set Phasers to… Real?

Real indeed. A Star Trek phaser using powerful Blu-Ray lasers has been put together by some… enthusiastic people, and this thing is actually pretty dangerous! It can ignite flash paper, it can pop balloons and, if shot directly into the eye, causes serious and permanent damage in an instant (like many other things shot into the eye, a bullet for instance, or acid.)     strangely this is not the first video of this type that I have spied on the internet. One was a guy who made, again, shaped like a gun, a DVD laser into a laser gun – arguably not as powerful, but just as sinister!!!

    What we should ask is; are there any potential application for good? inexpensive and easily constructible power tools for builders, perhaps, or is it going to be just another toy for kids to blind each other with =)
