Real indeed. A Star Trek phaser using powerful Blu-Ray lasers has been put together by some… enthusiastic people, and this thing is actually pretty dangerous! It can ignite flash paper, it can pop balloons and, if shot directly into the eye, causes serious and permanent damage in an instant (like many other things shot into the eye, a bullet for instance, or acid.)
